surfing skill levels

http://www.noosatropicsurf.net/surfing-skill-levels/ Tropicsurf has a comprehensive skills ladder which enables you and your coach a clear road map to improve your surfing. Every level below has 10 skills that need to be accomplished before moving onto the next level. Our Hottest 100 Skills ladder will empower you with a clear strategy on how to improve your surfing quickly. Ask us about it next time you are doing a private lesson with us here in Noosa. Ph 0414 369 076 Level 1 First timer. Novice. Beginner. Lots to learn – ideally commencing in calm water and then progression to gentle white wash. Level 2 Mastering standing, turning and riding the white wash. Practicing turn and stand skills in the whitewash to make the first green drop easier in the next level. Level 3 First green wave traverses. A complex achievement that needs the instructor to assist with positioning, wave selection and push-ins. Level 4 Starting to paddle into own green waves with no push – but still reliant on instructor to guide position, wave choice and timing with a lot of verbal assistance. Level 5 Independent and capable surfer who can trim, cutback and surf top to bottom. It may not be pretty but they are having fun and halfway there. Level 6 Capable surfer doing re-entries, floaters and trying to get radical. Sometimes a little busy so need to focus on style and holding a rail. Level 7 Carver. Performance surfer with speed and a decent roundhouse. However may struggle with timing or sequencing of rotations. Level 8 Shredder with comprehensive range of major maneuvers including a high quality bottom turn. Level 9 Master. You go big and make it look easy but still could perfect some new school innovation and finesse. Level 10 Innovator and all-rounder in any type of wave. Your surfing is often flawless and your name could be Kelly.

WHAT A TRIP!

My recent time in the Maldives was a career highlight, surfing with my grommethood heroes,Tommy Curren,Occy,Martin Potter and Damien Hardmen.
Though the years have passed since them winning their world titles, their mature surfing is still outstanding!
My job description with Tropicsurf who I work for as a roving surf guide and coach year round, was to ensure that the champs could go surfing anytime outside of the Surfing Champions competition.
The competition was held at the imfamous Maldivian surf break "Sultans"but we also got to surf other breaks nearby in which I saw some amazing surfing by Tom Curren and Dooma that I will never forget.
Here is some of footage from our first session together, the boys were mainly on their single fins while I was on my Formula Energy Twin Fin. Enjoy!

SURFARI BOAT BURNS WHILE SURFER ENJOYS WAVES

The Surfari boat "Royal Manta" that hit a reef in April carrying 23 tourists and 15 crew has finally been burnt to the ground.
Huge blooms of black smoke were seen billowing from the broken in half surfari boat at a favourite   break called Boat Yards.
Traveling Tropicsurf guide Tim Mitchell said "I couldn't resist not surfing a few waves into the flames and rescue boat, he laughed. The heat was so intense and the Navy didn't seem to mind me being there even though the chance of more explosions was possible.

The National Defence Force fire and rescue boat was on hand quickly with a water canon ,which was likely the final plan for removal after a number of failed attempts to remove the wreck in recent months.

SURFBOARD TRADERS IS HERE!

The last few months have been busy with this new business concept called Surfboard Traders!
I have noticed that the average aussie surfer spends a lot of their hard earned money with eBay and TradingPost fees trying to sell their boards.
It's time to put a STOP to that!..FREE is our key word!...because that will mean more money back in your pockets.
Our surfboard-traders.com.au will be the next big thing for the surfing community to connect with like minded people, buy and sell their boards, get the latest insights on surfboard development and on those who ride them ..punters and pros!
It is still sort of in development stage because we need heaps of listings, sort out a few glitches and then we will be taking it nationally through a big marketing push into the new year.
We are negotiating special deals at the moment for our founding members for listing their boards, as it will be you and your effort that will see this vision get off the ground.
So sign up! list some of your boards and lets make this happen. If you want to contribute photos, articles , videos, art etc..get in contact and lets see this happen!
Till next time...Tim

MONTHLY zRAX WINNER!

Tim as you can see from my photo I am desperate for a racking system. I live at Middleton SA, the home of SA Longboards, and my mates continually pay me out over it. If I had the Zrax stacking system I would be the envy of the coast.
I see from your site that you give one away a month, I am hoping I will be the lucky winner for the month.
Cheers
Rick
Congratulations Rick.... the zRAX are in the mail..Keep the photos coming team and win yourself a rack!

Hey Tim,
Just wanted to drop you a line and say how great the ZRAX is! I picked up one of them yesterday from Goodtime surf shop and went straight home and fitted it in my room. Man it was easy and looks great with my mal and mini mal hanging on the wall. Unreal product that does exactly what it say it will, well done!!

Liquid MotoCross!

Liquid MotoCross!
When the wind gets strong and the waves aren't getting into the Noosa points, I love to kitesurf this stretch from Coolum to Sunshine Beach with my friends.
If you haven't done it before, then the best way to describe it is like Liquid Motocross... skill, adrenalin and speed like no other water sport.
If you're a surfer then it is all about learning the kite skills, 6 months of flat water training then you will have waves on tap and a great cross training program. I recommend it!

Weekend coaching on North Shore...

Here's a glimpse of the action over the weekend. Some of my good friends and clients booked in a coaching session, at first i was sceptical as to the wave situation but as always we ended up with the goods. Fun waves and good times. Thanks boys and see you again soon...

Tube Clinic with Professional surf coach, Tim Mitchell...

The Tube Clinic
Where. Maldives, Noosa and the Mentawais

- Don’t worry. This is not like school. If you want to just surf all day long that’s fine. But in between sessions, we do have a structured, step-by-step program that you can participate in if you want to get off the shoulder and go deeper. You will receive a personal and detailed coaching booklet, photos of you to take home and in some cases, a DVD of the overall trip. Trip numbers are limited. And don’t worry – our coaching is personalized to your personal level of ability and comfort zone. It’s all about you and what you want to achieve out of it.

You should expect to learn how to:-

- Take off later, steeper, bigger and deeper – which is the real key to getting barreled
- Increase your relaxation and breath holding underwater
- Better read subtleties in tubing waves and line-ups
- Pull-in using varied approaches according to the situation
- Tweak your stance to suit your body’s natural shape and elasticity
- Understand why you are falling off in critical moments and how to remedy that
- Choose the right line according to wave type
- Master the pig-dog stance for backside kegs
- Increase your mental confidence and positive self talk
- Exit or fall safely in heavy situations to avoid injury
- See what you are doing right or wrong using photo and video evidence then plot a course for mastery of new skills
- Set a path for long-term improvement – this is just the beginning of your new life as a budding, barrel zen-master!
If you are interested in the tube trips..get in touch and we can make it happen. tim@zrax.com
